Controversy

Few days back some medical experts have opined that smoking on screen by iconic actors like Aishwarya Rai will increase the smoking habits among the masses. The scenes from Guzarish in which Aishwarya Rai is smoking should be removed. This is because the doctors believe the former Miss World smoking on screen will influence people to smoke as well.

My question is do films make such an impact? If yes why isn't the impact visible if an actor or actress does a sensational act in films. Films like Gangajal, Shool, etc portrayed an honest government servant. How many government servants have changed after watching these films?

The habits are inculcated right from the childhood days by the schools and parents. People get influenced to some extent from their friends circle. Any impact made by the film stars can at best be momentary. If the people start smoking looking at the character portrayed by the film star then I believe its an individual problem and not the problem of the actor/actress.

We need to understand that the character portrayed by the actress is smoking. It is our responsibility to educate people around us what is good and what is not. Again the problem arises do we really know what is good and what is not?

sir, its always been a trend with Indians that we point out the negative habit of others very quickly...
also the impact is really high regarding the cinema...many of the criminals are born out of the cinema itself...
the whole problem, as you said, ends at education....
its just that the govt knows that we, the people get easily carried away when we look at our superstars....
but the point is that we do have some brilliant movies in the past
which gathered appreciation but didn't impact much....

If the actor/actress cannot do justice to his/her role in the movie without smoking or drinking, then there is no point in arguing whether it is right or wrong. But I could name dozens of films where smoking is used merely as a means of showing off how cool the character is or how stylish his expressions are, even if there is no need at all to do so.I do not support the latter.

And contrary to your belief Sir, i really think movies make an impact on everyone, especially the younger generation, big time. The only problem is that audience, more often than not, ends up adopting the indecent side of their heroes rather than the good side.

And the reason is straightforward: Smoking a cigarette or drinking a glassful of branded liquor and feeling like a hero is a much more convenient thing to do for the common man as compared to standing up and fighting the corrupt; even though the protagonist in the film might do all of these.

Agreed with ur statement -"If the people start smoking looking at the character portrayed by the film star then I believe its an individual problem and not the problem of the actor/actress."
sir, bt it is often observed that ppl r more attractd 2wards -ve things dan good things. nd rahi baat actors nd actresses ki to many ppl hv dese actors as their role models. de follow dem a lot. if audience find their role models smoking n drinking on screen o evn behind d screen, they always try to b like dem n imitate their acts.
and sir u hv taught us dat there is a wide gap btwn being educated and being literate. educated ppl will chose their best way out. they know wats gud n wats nt..
